Boys will love haikus.

That's my quick haiku about this little book, Guyku, written by Bob Raczka and Peter H. Reynolds.  We are always looking for ways to motivate boys to write... Don't think you have to wait to do a whole poetry unit to throw some poetry into the mix.  Mix it up a bit-- haikus are little, they don't take much time, and they will give struggling writers a feeling of accomplishment!  Here is a nice haiku-writing instruction page from one of the authors of Guyku. 

Think about writing some haikus (even persuasive haikus??!!) during the two days before Thanksgiving!  Here is an example-- just picture a turkey writing this to persuade you not to eat him on Turkey Day.

Juicy, tender meatloaf.

Slathered with ketchup and cheese.

Just skip the turkey.
