Did you even know there is such a thing as "Poem in Your Pocket Day"? Well, there is. This year it is being celebrated on Thursday, April 30. What poem would you carry in your pocket if you were to celebrate? I think I'll carry this one:
The Red Wheelbarrow
William Carlos Williams
so much depends
upon
a red wheel
barrow
glazed with rain
water
beside the
white chickens.
I think it's a great poem to introduce to kids and to use as a "mentor text". Here is one I wrote:
Sweet Dreams
So much depends
upon
a gentle kiss
goodnight
books read at
bedtime
guarantees of sweet
dreams.
Think about giving your students a variety of printed poems to choose from and allowing them to keep them in their pocket to share with friends, other teachers, and their parents. It's a great way to celebrate National Poetry Month!
