Independent Reading Response Activities

After the CRCT, in second grade, we are really trying to prepare our babies for third grade. We try to do more independent reading and reading response activities. I am trying something new for the end of April and through May. Each student will choose a book on thier independent level. They will need to write a prediction about the book in their writing journal. Then they will read the book. After reading it several times, they will then write a response to the book in their journal. Following that, they need to choose a project to work on independently. The projects come from the book displayed. The projects are geared for independent work and help assess the students' comprehension of the book. Then the student will complete a self assessment rubric. Finally, they will meet with me for a conference on their book, journal, and project. I will have rubics for the projects and journal writing. We will see how it goes!

  1. Wow! That sounds awesome! I am reading Nancie Atwell's "The Reading Zone" and she talks about how very important choice is. I love the fact that you are going to let them choose their book and their project. I hyperlinked the book to the Scholastic website so folks could get more information...
